My Counsel: DO NOT LET YOUR HAPPINESS DEPEND ON SOMETHING YOU MAY LOSE
The statement “Do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose” emphasizes the importance of finding a stable and enduring source of joy rather than attaching happiness to temporary or uncertain things. It encourages building a sense of fulfillment on internal values or eternal truths, rather than external circumstances or possessions.
Many things in life, such as material possessions, relationships, status, or achievements, can bring happiness, but they are impermanent. They can be lost, changed, or taken away. If our happiness is entirely tied to these, then their loss can lead to deep disappointment or despair.
True and lasting happiness comes from something that cannot be taken away, such as a strong faith in God, an enduring sense of purpose, or an inner peace that transcends circumstances. For example, the Bible encourages believers to find their joy in God, whose love and promises are unchanging (Psalm 16:11, Philippians 4:4).
In practical terms, this means learning to appreciate and enjoy the good things in life without letting them define your sense of self or happiness. Instead, anchor your joy in things that are lasting, such as spiritual growth, meaningful relationships, and living a life of purpose and service. This perspective ensures that, even when faced with loss, you can maintain a sense of peace and contentment.
